Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul is finally getting around to hiring a finance and communications director for his re-election bid.
Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul’s reelection campaign posted LinkedIn job openings this week for a finance director and a communications director for the 2026 election cycle.
The campaign for the two-term Democratic incumbent announced Kaul’s reelection bid on Oct. 7, 2025, the same day he said he would not run for governor.
Kaul was widely viewed as a potential frontrunner for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. So it is odd that Kaul is scrambling to fill these crucial campaign positions nearly six months after he declared his candidacy. Odder still, Kaul is using LinkedIn to recruit talent.

One would think that a two-term Attorney General should have deeper ties to the state and national parties, the National Democratic Attorneys General Association, or even legislative staff to fill these roles before plastering the hiring opportunities on LinkedIn. What is unclear is whether these hires are new positions or back-fills, meaning Kaul has already had to part with staff. Either way, it’s not a good look. It’s easy to see these hiring and strategy and wonder if Kaul is taking the race seriously or if his heart is even in it.
Kaul, first elected attorney general in 2018 and reelected in 2022, faces Republican Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney this November in a rematch of the 2022 election. Toney announced his candidacy on Oct. 21, 2025, and reported raising more money than Kaul during the second half of 2025.
Both positions are listed under “Josh Kaul for Attorney General” and run through November 2026.
