Jay Schroeder won the Republican nomination for Wisconsin secretary of state on Tuesday, defeating three primary challengers in an open-seat race for the statewide office.
The Associated Press called the race for Schroeder at 8:42 p.m. Early returns showed him with more than 91,000 votes, ahead of Nate Pollnow with over 55,000, Cindy Werner with more than 28,000 and Brayden Myer with over 24,000.
Schroeder, a real estate and stock market investor and fourth-generation Wisconsinite, previously ran for the office in 2018 and 2022. He has campaigned on election integrity measures, including greater transparency and shifting more authority over elections away from the Wisconsin Elections Commission.
The position is open because incumbent Democratic Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski is running for lieutenant governor. Schroeder will face Democrat JoCasta Zamarripa, a Milwaukee Common Council member and former state representative, in the Nov. 3 general election. Green Party candidate Pete Karas is also expected on the ballot.
In Wisconsin, the secretary of state authenticates official documents, maintains certain state records and chairs the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands.
