Milwaukee’s Central Library, the crown jewel of the city’s public libraries, is about to host an event that makes absolutely no sense for a family‑centered institution.
On September 3rd, The Milwaukee Public Library (MPL) is rolling out what they’re calling “The Library Show,” a response to last week’s Milwaukee rap ban at The Garage on Brady Street.
But instead of using this moment to promote uplifting music and positive artists, MPL chose to bring violent, misogynistic, drug‑heavy rap music into a taxpayer‑funded building meant for children, teens, and families.
Here’s the kicker, they’re promoting this “show” as a literacy event.
According to CBS 58, MPL is hosting DJs Sunny Lou and his brother DJ Mando, DJ r3algrl, and rappers 414BigFrank, Sabbath, Lightris & Sero, and AyooLii, a certified “trapper.”
The first 50 attendees who sign up for a library card get a free event t‑shirt. This isn’t about literacy or education. This is nightlife culture being glorified in a public library.
The type of rap being showcased is not uplifting, not educational, and not appropriate for children. The music will be promoting violence, misogyny, drugs and illegal guns. This is not feel‑good Milwaukee music and it not a “community celebration.”
It’s vulgar, trashy content being placed in a building where kids come to read, learn, and feel safe. Libraries are not nightclubs. They should be a place where parents can bring toddlers for story time, teens study after school, and families attend educational programs.
So why is MPL hosting an event that contradicts every part of its mission? This is exactly what tax dollars should NOT be spent on.
Milwaukee is already struggling with violence, reckless driving, youth crime, and community instability. This was supposedly the reason for the Milwaukee rap ban in the first place. Why are we going backwards and celebrating violent behavior?
And yet, instead of promoting positive art, MPL is bending over backwards to “stand in solidarity” with a nightlife controversy. One of the commercials for the event is too vulgar to play for respectable society.
If MPL wants to promote literacy, they should be uplifting spoken word artists, local authors, positive musicians, educational performers, and community storytellers.
They should not be promoting violence in any form. Milwaukee’s families and taxpayers deserve a library that protects residents, not one that invites the very culture contributing to the city’s problems.
MPL is promoting an event that directly contradicts what a public library is supposed to stand for.
