The Wisconsin Fraternal Order of Police endorsed U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany for governor Tuesday, saying he will stand with officers and hold local leaders accountable when their policies get in the way of public safety.
“As governor, we will hold violent criminals responsible, end sanctuary jurisdictions, and make sure Wisconsin never joins the movement to defund the police.”
“He will ban sanctuary policies statewide and require local law enforcement agencies to cooperate with federal immigration authorities when dealing with criminal illegal immigrants, ensuring that if someone commits a crime and is in this country illegally, Wisconsin will not shield them from justice,” the organization said. It also said Tiffany “will hold prosecutors accountable, end soft-on-crime policies, and oppose efforts to release murderers, violent criminals, and sex offenders early.”
Tiffany called the endorsement an honor from men and women who “understand what it takes to keep our communities safe and the challenges law enforcement officers face every day.”
He contrasted the endorsement with Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley’s own words and record.
“David Crowley supports cutting Wisconsin’s prison population in half, opposed tougher penalties for repeat drunk drivers and domestic abusers, and even promised to be an ‘accomplice’ to illegal immigrants ‘no matter what,'” Tiffany said. “As governor, we will hold violent criminals responsible, end sanctuary jurisdictions, and make sure Wisconsin never joins the movement to defund the police.”
The accomplice line is Crowley’s own words. In a video his campaign posted, he said, “And when it comes down to the immigration, I always say I’m not an ally; I’m an accomplice. I’m going to be with you no matter what.” Crowley has also backed Tony Evers’ goal of cutting the state prison population in half.
The Wisconsin FOP represents officers across the state and is affiliated with the national Fraternal Order of Police, which counts more than 380,000 members. Tuesday’s endorsement joins a law enforcement list that already includes more than 20 Wisconsin sheriffs, the Milwaukee Police Association, the Kenosha Professional Police Association board, and the Milwaukee Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, which represents more than 285 members and endorsed Tiffany in July.
