The rivalry between the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears has never lacked intensity, but even the fiercest competitors earn respect. On Friday, Wisconsin and Illinois football fans mourned the passing of Mike Ditka, the Pro Football Hall of Famer whose toughness, fiery personality and championship legacy helped define an era of NFL football.
Ditka was known to generations of Bears fans as “Da Coach.” On Friday, Oct. 9, his family announced his passing at 86. He led Chicago to its historic Super Bowl XX victory following the 1985 season, cementing his place among the most recognizable figures in franchise history.
The Green Bay Packers acknowledged the legacy of its longtime rival, calling Ditka “one of the fiercest competitors in NFL history.”
“Mike helped define the intensity and tradition of the Packers-Bears rivalry, the oldest in professional football,” the Packers said in their Oct. 9 statement. “He embodied the toughness and passion that have made the rivalry one of the most storied in all of sports.”
The organization added that although Ditka was a formidable opponent, his contributions to football and the rivalry would always be respected and remembered by the Green Bay Packers.
The tribute is a reminder of what makes the Packers-Bears rivalry so legendary. The competition is fierce, but the respect transcends team colors.
Former Packers quarterback Brett Favre said in a social media post: “My condolences to the Ditka family and to all Bear fans on the passing of Coach Mike Ditka. It was truly an honor to play against you and your teams. Now rest in peace and God Bless you Coach,” Favre said.
Ditka’s football legacy began long before he became the face of Chicago. As a player, he helped establish the tight end as a major offensive weapon, earning induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988. He became the defining figure of the Bears’ dominant 1985 championship team. His squad was remembered for its punishing defense, larger-than-life personalities and unforgettable “Super Bowl Shuffle.”
The Bears wrote “Mike Ditka embodied the spirit of Chicago and will be deeply missed” in a social media post.
For Packers fans, Ditka represented the opponent across the border — the imitating, formidable, and widely respected coach Green Bay wanted to beat. For Bears fans, he embodied Chicago football at its toughest and most memorable. His iconic mustache, tie and sweater vest while furiously chewing gum on the sidelines will never be forgotten.
Tributes arriving from across the NFL to recognize a man whose impact reached far beyond the field. Mike Ditka leaves behind an inimitable legacy all sports fans can respect. RIP Ditka.
