Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Pro Tempore Kevin Petersen has announced that he will not seek re-election.
Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Pro Tempore Kevin Petersen, a Republican from Waupaca, announced his retirement from the Legislature.
His departure adds to a wave of Republican retirements in the Wisconsin Legislature ahead of the 2026 elections. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos announced his retirement in February after a record tenure leading the chamber.
In the Senate, Republican Sen. Van Wanggaard declared this week that he would not seek reelection in November, marking the second GOP retirement from a competitive swing district this year following Sen. Rob Huttonβs announcement in January.
These exits come as Republicans maintain majorities in both chambers but face challenges in holding seats amid shifting political dynamics.
Petersen’s district, now Assembly District 57 following redistricting, is considered a safe Republican seat.
