Increased cost estimates have prompted the Washington County Board to abandon plans to rename a portion of County Highway K ‘Charlie J. Kirk Way.’
Plans to rename a portion of County Highway K in Washington County “Charlie J. Kirk Way” appear to have ended after County Board Chair Jeffrey Schleif claimed the project’s actual costs are substantially higher than the original $50,000 estimate.
Even though the proposal was supposed to be completely financed by private donors, Schleif’s assessment, reported Friday by local media, effectively ends the proposal without a full board vote. The measure had advanced on March 18, when the county Executive Committee voted unanimously to forward the resolution to the full board, which was scheduled to consider it on April 21.
More than 100 people attended the March 18 Executive Committee meeting, many carrying signs urging members to reject the renaming, according to a CBS58 report.
No further details on the revised cost figure or the next steps were immediately available. The proposal had drawn public attention after the committee’s action earlier in the month.
