Democrats in the Wisconsin Legislature are signing a multistate letter urging members of President Trump’s Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove him from power over his handling of Operation Epic Fury.
Wisconsin state Rep. Ryan Clancy sent an urgent email Tuesday morning urging fellow state legislators to sign a multi-state letter that criticizes President Donald Trump’s handling of the ongoing conflict with Iran and demands that his Cabinet invoke the 25th Amendment to remove him from office.
In the message, sent to all Wisconsin Assembly and Senate members, Clancy invited colleagues to back a document organized by Michigan Rep. Carrie Rheingans’ office. The letter opposes what it calls the “now-escalating war against Iran,” urges Trump’s Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment, and calls on Congress to exercise its Article I authorities.
β[Trump’s] rhetoric and actions now demonstrate his obvious unfitness for the office,” Clancy wrote, giving a tight deadline of 2:30 p.m. CDT Tuesday for signatures endorsing the letter.
The move comes amid heightened tensions in the U.S.-Iran conflict, now in its second month. Trump has issued strong warnings to Tehran, including threats of devastating strikes on infrastructure if Iran fails to meet deadlines related to the Strait of Hormuz.
βWe, currently elected state legislators, write to you today with two demands,β the letter begins. βFirst, Members of the Cabinet and Vice President Vance, we demand that you immediately invoke the 25th Amendment and remove President Trump from office. Second, Members of Congress, we demand that you assert your authority and enforce your war powers as laid out in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution.β
Clancy, who identifies as a socialist and represents Assembly District 19 in Milwaukee, has frequently opposed Trump administration policies. The email described the war as “illegal, unpopular, and now potentially catastrophic,” echoing earlier Democratic legislative efforts in Wisconsin that urged the state’s congressional delegation to reject what they termed Trump’s “illegal war in Iran.”
The 25th Amendment allows for the temporary removal of a president deemed unable to discharge his duties, typically invoked only in cases of severe incapacity. Calls to use it against Trump have surfaced periodically from his opponents since his first term and have never been taken seriously.
