Immigration and Customs Enforcement ICE) agents interrupted a planned arrest operation in Milwaukee to help rescue a woman trapped in her overturned vehicle after a crash, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said.
According to the DOJ, incident occurred June 29 at the intersection of 20th Street and Cleveland Avenue. One ICE agent heard the crash while the team prepared for enforcement action and went to investigate, officials said. A vehicle that ran a stoplight collided with another car, causing one to roll over and strike a light pole. The impact pinned a 31-year-old woman inside the wreckage.
The agent alerted the rest of the team, who called 911 and assisted at the scene. Working together, the officers freed the woman from the mangled car and provided first aid until emergency medical technicians arrived, the Department of Homeland Security said.
“Our best of the best ICE officers put their lives on the line to arrest the worst of the worst,” Acting Assistant DHS Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement. “Despite smears and hoaxes spread by sanctuary politicians and the media, our officers put their lives on the line to make our communities safer. They are heroes.”
The episode is the latest in a series of incidents in which ICE personnel have been credited with aiding civilians in distress. Earlier this year, an ICE officer performed the Heimlich maneuver on a choking child while assisting TSA agents, officials said.
Milwaukee police have confirmed the crash was not related to any pursuit involving federal agents.
