Law enforcement officers fatally shot a knife-wielding suspect Tuesday afternoon on Madison’s Near East Side after he confronted them during a call about suspicious activity, prompting crowds to gather as authorities stressed the dangers first responders face.
Madison police responded around 1:35 p.m. to reports of a man in his 30s checking vehicles near East Williamson and South Baldwin streets. Four officers encountered the suspect, who drew a fixed-blade knife, according to preliminary accounts and bystander videos.
Officers deployed a Taser, which temporarily subdued him, but a violent struggle broke out on the ground. An officer fired three shots, striking the suspect in the head. Despite immediate medical aid, the man died at a hospital. Two officers were injured in the confrontation.
“All officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation, as is standard procedure,” Madison Police Chief John Patterson said. “Our officers put their lives on the line every day to protect the community. We will await the facts from the independent probe.”
The Wisconsin Department of Justice is conducting a full investigation, reviewing body camera footage, witness statements and videos. The Dane County District Attorney’s office will determine whether the use of force was justified.
Police urged patience and calm, noting that premature judgments could endanger public safety. Community leaders called for peaceful demonstrations as the investigation proceeds.
The suspect’s name has not been released pending family notification. No other injuries to bystanders were reported. Several streets in the area remained closed into the evening for evidence collection.
