Today, as we celebrate 250 years of independence, I am reminded of the enduring spirit of the American people that has carried our nation forward for two and a half centuries.
That spirit has always been found in ordinary Americans willing to answer a call to serve something greater than themselves. I know that because it shaped my own life.
I dropped out of high school at 16. Two years later, I joined the United States Navy and ultimately spent 26 years in uniform before retiring as a Navy SEAL Senior Chief. The military changed my life, but more importantly, it gave me a purpose and taught me that our greatest achievements come when we commit ourselves to something bigger than our own interests. That lesson is woven throughout the American story.
At the heart of America’s 250-year story is the spirit of the American people. It is a spirit that does not always seek recognition, but one that has always been there, woven into the fabric of our nation. For 250 years, our nation has endured because ordinary Americans have been willing to do extraordinary things for our country. Nowhere is that spirit more evident than in the men and women who wear the uniform.
Today, I remain optimistic about our future because I see that same spirit alive in the next generation.
Under President Trump and Secretary Hegseth, our military recruitment has surged to its highest levels in more than 15 years. Young Americans are choosing to serve because they are proud of our country and want to be part of something meaningful. At a time when so much division often dominates the headlines, these young men and women remind us that our shared values are stronger than our differences.
The strength of the United States has never been found in our weapons, our wealth, or our institutions alone. It has always been rooted in the spirit of the American people. That spirit has carried our nation through every challenge of the last 250 years, and it will carry us through the challenges that lie ahead.
America’s 250th anniversary is more than a celebration of our history. It is a reminder that every generation has a role in shaping the future of this country. Two hundred and fifty years ago, our founding fathers made an extraordinary commitment to the cause of liberty. Since then, each generation has carried that responsibility forward. I believe the next generation will continue to honor this responsibility.
The spirit that built our republic is alive and well today in Americans who believe our best days are still ahead. Our spirit remains America’s greatest strength, and it will continue to guide our nation for generations to come.
