Judge Maria Lazar has responded to Wisconsin Supreme Court opponent Chris Taylor postponing their debate over kidney stones.
Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Maria Lazar has responded to opponent Chris Taylor postponing Wednesday night’s lone debate after she was diagnosed with kidney stones.
In an interview Wednesday on “The Dan O’Donnell Show,” Lazar offered her support for Taylor in her recovery but likened her plight to a similar situation in which she taught at a judicial conference while suffering from kidney stones.
I wish her well,” Lazar said. “I know kidney stones can be a painful circumstance.”
However, Lazar noted that she herself had kidney stones and was still able to make a presentation at a judicial conference several years ago.
“I had them way back when I was supposed to be teaching at a judicial seminar, and I’ll say that I actually took some medication, did my lunch, did my speech, did everything,” Lazar recalled. “The only thing I didn’t do is drive.”
Wednesday night’s debate, which was already exceedingly late in the election cycle, was moved to Thursday, April 2nd at 7:00 pm–just five days before the Supreme Court election. The rescheduled debate will still be broadcast on WISN-TV and on tv stations across the state, but it will no longer take place in front of a live audience at Marquette University Law School.
Lazar stopped short of saying that Taylor could have or should have debated Wednesday night, but noted that kidney stones are not a surprise medical diagnosis.
“It’s not something that sneaks up on you,” she said. “You pretty much know for a while, and I’m just saying that were things different (than my kidney stones situation)? I’m not going to say anything further than that. I’m just going to say what I’ve done in the past and we’ll leave it at that.”
Lazar and Taylor will compete for an open seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court in the April 7th Spring Election. In-person absentee voting began Tuesday.
