A Milwaukee police officer was injured late Saturday night after being struck by fireworks set off in a Brady Street Walgreens parking lot amid a night of teen takeovers illegal that descended parts of the Fourth of July celebration across the city into chaos.
The incident occurred near Cambridge Avenue and Brady Street as crowds turned unruly. Video footage widely shared online shows the officer on the ground with fellow officers providing aid. A source tells The Heartland Post the officer was not hit by exploding debris but was injured by the concussive force of the blast itself.
Milwaukee Police have not yet identified the officer or announced any arrests. Another officer was hurt early Sunday in a separate mob gathering on Water Street. MPS said in a news conference early Sunday that a teenaged suspect struck the officer with his vehicle. The officer and others on the scene fired at the suspect, who took off. He was arrested following a brief chase and it was discovered that he had suffered a non-life-threatening injury.
The officer, a woman in her 20s with less than a year of service in MPS, also suffered non-life-threatening injuries. An investigation is ongoing.
