The Madison Metropolitan School District is investigating a teacher at Vel Phillips Memorial High School who may have had an inappropriate relationship with a student.
The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) said Wednesday it recently learned that a teacher at Vel Phillips Memorial High School may have had an inappropriate relationship with a student.
The Madison Police Department has been notified and is investigating while the teacher was immediatley placed on leave, the district said in a statement. Superintendent Dr. Joe Gothard said he “sincerely apologizes to students and families” who have been impacted by this situation.
“These situations rattle an entire community, and our team has support systems in place to help those who need additional assistance. I want to reiterate what I shared at the Board of Education meeting on March 16: I have zero tolerance for anyone who does not put our students first. This means placing students’ care and learning as their highest priority. Our students are why we are here, and I expect nothing less than the highest level of support for all of our students. I will hold people accountable when they do not have our students’ best interests in mind.”
Because of the nature of the investigation, no further details were shared with the public.
