The national press has spent months treating November like another 2018 which saw a massive win for Democrats. Trump’s numbers are underwater and the generic ballot leans Democrat. Therefore, they tell us, Republicans are toast.
Yes, the president’s approval has sagged. Democrats, help me understand something. Since when do Wisconsin voters treat every Republican on the ballot like a human extension of one man in Washington? That theory gets tested on Election Day, but history tells us Wisconsin voters don’t just pay attention to the topline. Ticket-splitting is not dead here.
Candidate quality is the piece national pundits skip. Wisconsin Republicans actually have good ones. Bryan Steil in the First District is brutally hard to beat. Mike Roberts is running in what may be the hardest state Senate seat on the map, and you can still make the case he is our best legislative candidate this cycle. Local candidates can shake a hand, answer a door, and talk to a ticket-splitter who will never read a national generic-ballot average.
The enthusiasm gap was supposed to bury us. It looks less like a canyon and more like a closing door. Republicans nationally have piled up cash while Democrats fight each other and watch their national committee swim in debt. Wisconsin Republicans have followed that pattern and seemed poised to be competitive.
Remember 2022? Republicans were supposed to win across the board during a $5 a gallon for gas, Biden midterm, but Tony Evers won anyway. The status quo is the status quo until it is no longer. 2026 is a unique year with an open governor’s race, a veto amendment on the ballot, and a Democrat already promising to use the same partial-veto tricks. This is going to be closer than the lefty troglodytes on X want it to be.
Call it vibes if you want. Republicans are not trapped between a rock and a hard place the way cable news described it six weeks ago. There is a lot of game left. The work still has to get done. But the blowout narrative was always a story they wanted, not the one they are going to get.
