Former Wisconsin Governor, US Health and Human Services Secretary, and University of Wisconsin System President Tommy Thompson on Friday endorsed Rep. Tom Tiffany’s gubernatorial bid, ending speculation that Thompson himself might challenge Tiffany for the Republican nomination.
“The State has to keep reforming and moving forward,” Thompson said in a statement released by the Tiffany campaign. “That’s why I am endorsing Tom today. At this critical moment, he is the right leader for Wisconsin’s future, and I look forward to campaigning for him and all Republicans across the state this November.”
“Governor Thompson’s leadership has left an incredible legacy on Wisconsin, and generations of Wisconsinites are better off because of his service,” Tiffany said. “We are just two kids from Elroy and Elmwood who believe in Wisconsin’s potential, and it’s an honor to have his endorsement.”
Thompson had floated the possibilty of running for the Republican nomination earlier this year, but decided against it and instead throws his support for Tiffany, who has been the sole Republican candidate and presumptive nominee for months now.
His lone challenger, Washington County Executive Josh Schoemann, dropped out of the race earlier this year and endorsed Tiffany after President Trump endorsed Tiffany.
Tiffany will receive the Republican Party of Wisconsin’s formal endorsement at the party’s convention next weekend.
