There is a time and place to discuss support for postpartum women and how our healthcare system treats new moms. I have my own stories of postpartum and newborn care that were anything but supportive.
But the reality right now is that three children are dead.
It is a tragedy.
Three dead children is not the time to find a new feminist hero.
Three dead children is not the time to have a debate over the challenges of motherhood.
There dead children is not the time to fire up the true crime podcast propaganda.
It has been absolutely sickening to watch the mostly progressive, radical women embrace Lindsay Clancy as some sort of folk hero to their bastardized version of feminism. Because she is anything but a hero. Lindsay Clancy has admitted to killing her children. The question the jury was asked to deliberate was if she should be held criminally responsible for her crimes given her mental state.
In interviews after the mistrial was declared, jurors from the trial lamented to the news that the lone hold out juror “had the hardest time getting off the fact that Lindsay viciously killed her kids.” That mindset should terrify all of us. Because the lone hold out juror was correct: Lindsay did viscously kill her children, and 11 other jurors were willing to essentially excuse the murders.
Are postpartum psychosis and postpartum depression real? Yes.
Could those diagnoses theoretically drive a new mom to commit horrible, unthinkable crimes? Yes.
But here’s the thing.
Postpartum psychosis or depression are temporary. Yet Lindsay Clancy continues to fight these charges. As a mom myself, I cannot imagine knowing that my children were dead from my actions and wanting to fight those charges in any meaningful way. I think nearly every mom would be begging for the death penalty, or at least immediately pleading guilty.
But instead, Lindsay Clancy continues her legal fight, and has activated a brand new wave of “feminism” that should scare us all. “Feminism” that does not fight for equality. “Feminism” that demeans motherhood into a chore, instead of the greatest blessing. “Feminism” that can justify an absolutely horrific crime.
If this is the new wave of feminism, you can count me out. I’ll continue to fight for moms, for true equality (not special treatment), and the next generation of women.
