A panel discussion focused on nuclear energy as a reliable source for meeting growing demand on energy policy drew a full house to Smoke on the Water BBQ at Okauchee Lake last week.
Americans for Prosperity-Wisconsin (AFP-WI) already recognizes the $2 billion in rate hikes burdening our ratepayers since 2019. The chapter believes we should strive for a more affordable future that recognizes technological advancements and safe, alternative sources of energy for generations to come. That’s why AFP-WI brought in a panel of experts to share their thoughts on this topic and what attendees can do to help drive a prosperous future for the Badger State.
AFP-WI local engagement director Elizabeth Wolnik moderated the two-hour forum featuring State Sen. Julian Bradley, energy defense expert Paul Schecklman, and former Miss America and nuclear engineer Grace Vanderhei. The event addressed several energy-related issues from nuclear power’s advantages for Wisconsin to questions about data centers.
Although nuclear energy has long faced controversy and confusion, mounting evidence shows it is a safe, reliable, and necessary part of our energy future. Sen. Bradley highlighted the growing momentum among elected officials and the public in support of nuclear power. Wisconsin should capitalize on this shift to meet the energy demands of the next generation of economic development.
Vanderhei discussed how France uses over 60% of its energy from nuclear and consistently boasts some of the cheapest electricity in Western Europe due to its massive fleet of reactors. Reliance on nuclear has thus far resulted in low, consistent consumer rates. Experts increasingly emphasize that Wisconsin needs to follow suit.

“It was great interacting with a crowd of people who recognize that nuclear energy and emerging technologies can pave the way to a more abundant future in Wisconsin,” said Scheckleman. “This event proved what we’re seeing nationally: states need more power to secure their economic futures. Nuclear energy and new technologies can launch Wisconsin into a new era of prosperity.”

Sen. Bradley noted, “Nuclear energy provides the dependable baseload power needed to unleash economic growth, help keep electricity affordable for Wisconsin families, and ensure our electric grid remains reliable.”
AFP-WI will continue working with policymakers, energy experts, and Wisconsin families to advance practical, innovative solutions that deliver affordable and reliable energy. By embracing proven technologies like nuclear power, the state can strengthen its economy, protect ratepayers, and position Wisconsin as a leader in the next generation of energy development.
