Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) staff recommended Tuesday that state Rep. Russell Goodwin, a Milwaukee Democrat, qualify for the Democratic gubernatorial primary ballot after a review showed he submitted one more than the minimum number of nomination signatures required
Staff determined Goodwin turned in nomination papers with 200 valid signatures; one more than required under state law for candidates running for Wisconsin Assembly.
The recommendation will be considered by the six-member bipartisan commission at its meeting Tuesday. Materials prepared for commissioners outlined the close call on Goodwin’s petitions.
His opponent for the Democratic nomination, Jordan Roman, challenged his signatures. Goodwin blamed fellow Democrat Rep. Ryan Clancy for secretly supporting Roman’s ballot challenge, but Clancy vehemently denied this.
