State Department of Revenue agents allegedly seized beer from the Minocqua Brewing Company late Wednesday in what appears to be an enforcement action tied to Wisconsin’s alcohol excise tax laws, according to a report first published by the Lakeland Times on their Facebook page.
The seizure comes as owner Kirk Bangstad, a longtime liberal activist and frequent critic of local institutions, posted a cryptic message on Facebook addressing the incident. In the post, Bangstad alluded to the agents’ actions without providing full details, framing the event in the context of his ongoing battles with authorities and media outlets.

Wisconsin Department of Revenue agents have authority to seize alcoholic beverages when there is evidence of violations involving unpaid excise taxes, unlicensed production or distribution, or other breaches of state alcohol beverage control laws. These actions are standard to protect state revenue, as breweries are required to pay taxes on all beer produced and sold. Non-compliance can result in seizures to prevent further loss to the state treasury and to support broader investigations into tax evasion or regulatory violations.
Bangstad has a documented history of legal conflicts in the Northwoods, including a high-profile defamation lawsuit with Lakeland Times publisher Gregg Walker that resulted in a substantial judgment against him. He has also faced prior arrests related to disturbances involving Walker and the newspaper’s office, as well as scrutiny over his political action committee’s spending practices.
Most recently, the Wisconsin Elections Commission unanimously disqualified Kirk Bangstad from the 2026 gubernatorial primary ballot after determining he submitted only 1,504 valid signatures, short of the 2,000 required.
The latest development adds to questions about the brewery’s operational and financial compliance. Bangstad’s Facebook post, shared yesterday, offered a limited explanation and appeared to tie the raid to his concocted narrative of persecution by political and media adversaries.
No immediate charges or further details on the exact tax issues prompting the seizure have been released by authorities.
