Water Street, one of Milwaukee’s most iconic entertainment districts, is now on the chopping block. Alderman Bob Bauman is openly floating the idea of shutting it down indefinitely. Yes, an entire entertainment district. Yes, the same Water Street that brings in millions in revenue, supports dozens of businesses, and anchors Milwaukee’s nightlife.
“I think the Water Street entertainment district is going to go away as we’ve known it and frankly maybe that’s a good thing,” Bauman said at a recent committee meeting. “All it is is concentrated drinking and disorder.”
In that same committee meeting, aldermen had to reverse the 10 p.m. food truck shutdown because a court ruled it unconstitutional. Food trucks can now stay open until 1 am.
Bauman still insists food trucks are the problem. Food trucks are not the problem. Food trucks bring light and eyes on the street, the exact things that make nightlife safer.
Blaming food trucks is a distraction from the real problem. There have been years of ignored warnings and zero proactive leadership.
Water Street didn’t collapse overnight. Leadership let it get out of control. For years, businesses begged for safety measures. For years, MPD asked for more resources. Residents complained about reckless driving, shootings, teen mobs, and chaos.
Bauman did nothing. He didn’t fight for more police funding. He didn’t demand early intervention and prevention. He didn’t push for structural safety improvements. He didn’t stand with businesses when they asked for help. Now, after years of ignoring the problem, he wants to shut the whole district down?
Just last weekend, MPD began aggressively towing cars and issuing citations. Great. It’s necessary. But also years overdue. These measures should have been implemented when Water Street first showed signs of trouble, not after businesses closed, residents complained, and violence became routine.

Closing Water Street is not the answer. Water Street is a cultural anchor. It’s a business hub, a nightlife destination, a part of Milwaukee’s identity.
Closing Water Street would devastate small businesses, eliminate jobs, slash tax revenue, and push crime into less controlled areas.
What Milwaukee SHOULD be doing, is increasing police visibility and patrols, keep towing cars every weekend, issue citations consistently, partner with businesses and food trucks, improve lighting and street design, create a coordinated safety plan, engage residents and owners in decision making. The city also needs to work with the city attorney’s office to ensure strict penalties will be enforced.
Water Street doesn’t need to die, it just needs to be managed better.
For the people who live, work, and play here they deserve a city that doesn’t give up on its most vibrant spaces. Water Street goers deserve to enjoy a safe space where they can have fun and enjoy one of Milwaukee’s most popular entertainment districts.
