Shoves, thrown objects turn postgame handshake into melee at UWM Panther Arena
Soccer fans are known for their passionate support of their club, and Milwaukee is no different. A postgame scuffle involving players from the Milwaukee Wave and San Diego Sockers spilled into the stands and tunnel area Wednesday night after Game 1 of the Major Arena Soccer League Cup finals at UWM Panther Arena.
The Sockers defeated the Wave 5-4. As both teams shook hands at midfield following the final whistle, San Diego defender Cesar Cerda and Milwaukee’s Tony Walls became entangled. Video review showed Cerda striking Walls as he fell, according to a game report from OurSports Central. Referee Rich Grady issued Cerda a red card for violent conduct after the review, resulting in a one-game suspension.
As the Sockers attempted to exit the field through the tunnel, spectators threw beer, cups, and water bottles at the visiting players, as video posted on X by local sports reporting legend Lance Allan showed. Players from both teams converged near the exit, leading to pushing and shoving between athletes, fans, and security staff. Frames from the clip showed Sockers players confronting spectators behind glass barriers, with some raising their arms and others restrained amid the chaos, as objects continued to be thrown.
Security and officials eventually cleared the area and directed players back toward their locker rooms, according to eyewitness accounts and local media reports. No injuries or arrests were immediately reported.
The incident occurred in the first game of the best-of-three championship series between the two most decorated franchises in arena soccer. Game 2 is scheduled for Friday night in San Diego.
Cerda’s suspension will sideline him for the next match unless overturned by league review, MASL discipline records show. Game 2 will take place in Frontwave Arena in San Diego on Friday night.
