Our country seems to be more divided than ever. As the years pass since September 11, 2001, more and more Americans are forgetting what that tragedy meant, and how united we were afterwards.
There are even schools and teachers who are choosing to not teach the history of 9/11, or perhaps even worse, whitewashing the true impact of the terrorist attack and why it happened in the first place.
But not every teacher.
My son’s kindergarten teacher, in only her second year of teaching, has taken a different approach. She asked all of the students to wear red, white and blue to school today. She taught them that even in times of tragedy, it’s our job to show that we always love America and no other country or bad guys could possibly take that away from us.
A lot can be learned from this teacher. Most likely, she was not alive herself when 9/11 happened, but she is going above and beyond to instill in her students why we should proud of our country, especially in the face of tragedy.
As we commemorate the 25th Anniversary of that dark day in our nation’s history, and remember the stories of the lives lost and the many heroes who sacrificed everything, it’s important to also take a moment to appreciate the teachers who are keeping these stories alive and instilling a love of country in the next generation.
