Former Gov. Tommy Thompson endorsed Tom Tiffany for governor Friday. Thompson, the longest-serving governor in Wisconsin history, former United States Secretary of Health and president of the University of Wisconsin System, made the endorsement announcement after Thompson once again floated the possibility he would run for governor himself.
“At this critical moment, he is the right leader for Wisconsin’s future, and I look forward to campaigning for him and all Republicans across the state this November,” Thompson said.
Tiffany responded to the endorsement.
“Governor Thompson’s leadership has left an incredible legacy on Wisconsin,” Tiffany said. “We are just two kids from Elroy and Elmwood who believe in Wisconsin’s potential, and it’s an honor to have his endorsement.”
It underscores Thompson’s continued influence in Wisconsin politics and ends any speculation that the former governor would run again after months of speculation that he would enter the field.
With Thompson’s announcement, Tiffany remains the lone viable candidate in the Republican primary. The primary election will be held August 11th.
